A Chicago man has been charged with plotting to murder his wife with puffer fish toxin.
Edward F Bachner IV is accused of possessing the toxin to help kill his wife and collect a $20 million life insurance payment.
The 35-year-old has also been charged with lying to the internal revenue service (IRS) to collect over $500,000 in income tax refunds for three years which he was not owed.
Mr Bachner was arrested last June and remains in custody having pleaded not guilty to the charges.
He is reported to have been caught by police taking a delivery of tetrodotoxin, which can be fatal when fish containing the substance are eaten.
The Associated Press news agency also cites prosecutors in claiming syringes, needles and a book on how to poison people where found when officers later searched his home.
