At least nine Iraqis belonging to a US-allied militia group were killed in a suicide bomb attack in Babil province, south of the country's capital.
The attack took place at an army post where members from the Awakening groups were collecting their salaries, according to the AFP news agency.
The Awakening groups consist of Sunni Iraqis, paid and trained by the US, who have taken up arms against al-Qaida insurgents.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
In the past few weeks, the arrest of leaders of the Awakening councils has raised tensions with the government of Baghdad which has a majority Shia leadership.
Since their formation in 2006, the local groups have been credited with playing a great role in improving security in the country.
