A member of Yemen's ruling party was shot dead in a rebel ambush
A member of Yemen's ruling party has been shot dead as he drove through a rebel stronghold in the country, the AFP news agency has said.
Saleh al-Hindi, a member of the General People's Congress, died after the vehicle in which he was travelling came under fire in the north-west province of Saada today.
Shiite Zaidi rebels have waged an on-off insurgency in the region since 2004.
Mr al-Hindi's son and three bodyguards were killed in the ambush, AFP quotes local witnesses as saying.
Ten other people are believed to have been wounded in the attack, with four of them seriously so.
Hundreds of people have been killed in fighting between the rebels and government troops since 2004.
On Wednesday, three policemen were killed and another four wounded in a bomb attack in Marib, 105 miles east of Sanaa.
