A terrible mistake from young Newcastle fly-half Rory Clegg cost the Flacons victory against Worcester today as the match ended 16-16 at Kingston Park.
The Falcons had opened up a 16-9 lead as Phil Dawson scored a try, which Clegg had converted and the 18-year-old also kicked three penalties.
Eoghan Hickey had kept the Warriors in the game with three penalties and they got a draw after Pat Sanderson scored a late try after Clegg had given away possession next to his own try-line.
The mistake must have been a bitter pill to swallow for the young Clegg as he had a fine game up until the crucial error.
He stared the game by successfully kicking a penalty which brought his side level on 3-3 after Hickey had kicked an early penalty. Clegg then kicked a beautiful cross-field kick which Dawson picked up to crash over for the try.
Clegg added the extra two points as a result of the try and also kicked a penalty five minutes later to secure a ten point lead for his side.
Hickey kicked two more penalties in the first-half as Newcastle went in 16-9, after dominating the opening period.
The Falcons came close to making the points safe as Clegg burst through the Worcester defence, but both Tom May and Matt Thompson were stopped short of the try-line.
With only 11 minutes of the game left, Clegg came up with the crucial error which led to Worcester earning a draw. The fly-half tried to throw a line-out ball to himself but slipped and lost control of the ball and Worcester won the resulting maul. They worked the ball out to the left and Sanderson scored the try to make the scores level.
