A woman has died after the cliff face she was walking under collapsed and subsequently buried her, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the south beach area of Whitehaven, Cumbria, at 11:50 GMT today after receiving reports of a collapsed cliff face.

A spokesperson for Cumbria police revealed that rescuers removed the debris of rocks surrounding the woman, but attempts to revive her failed and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Formal identification on the woman is expected to be carried out tomorrow, with an inquest also due to be opened.

A force spokesperson added that a "large part of the beach front" had collapsed onto the woman.
