Portsmouth secured their first points of the 2009/10 Premier League season after a narrow victory over fellow strugglers Wolves at Molineux.
A header from Hassan Yebda, on his first league start for the club, gave Pompey's under-fire manager Paul Hart some breathing space.
However, it was a staunch rearguard action from the south-coast side in the second half that saw them hold onto their precious lead.
Goalkeeper David James saved well from Greg Halford and Kevin Doyle, while summer signing Tal Ben Haim produced several excellent challenges to deny the hosts.
Portsmouth's Mark Wilson was also fortunate to escape unpunished for a handball in the area after Michael Kightly's cross struck the defender on the arm.
But the three points will be a welcome relief for Hart's side, who have been unlucky not to pick up any positive results in their first seven games.
The news is a bright spot at the end of another difficult week at Fratton Park, which saw an announcement on Thursday that the players had not been paid because of the continuing financial problems at the club.
