Wins for Serena and Venus Williams kept alive hopes of the elder of the two siblings reaching the semi-finals of the end-of-season WTA championships in Doha.
Serena Williams defeated Elena Dementieva 6-2 6-4 - a result which kept alive Venus' hopes and also assured the younger of the siblings a place in the last four of an event which is contested by the top eight female players in the world.
Venus, who has lost her previous two matches in Doha, also did her bit by later beating Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2 6-7 6-4 to avoid elimination from the lucrative tournament.
The American now needs Elena Dementieva to lose to Kuznetsova, which would see Venus make the next round at the expense of the Russians.
The Serena v Dementieva match never looked like living up to the classic Wimbledon semi-final the two opponents played earlier this year.
Only the outcome was the same as Williams survived an early break to race away with the first set before keeping her patience to break late in the second set.
"Finally" seems to be the buzzword on the lips of the world number one at the moment. It was the word she uttered after converting her third match point of the evening and she used it again when she said: "I'm happy to finally do well."
