Jonny Wilkinson inspired Newcastle to a shock 26-21 win over high-flying Bristol in the Guinness Premiership at Kingston Park.
The England international, who was making his start since September 8th after recovering from a knee injury, kicked a penalty and a drop goal as the Falcons clinched only their second victory of the season.
Wilkinson, starting at fly half, also kicked two conversions as Newcastle rammed in three tries through Matthew Tait, Matt Thompson, and Brent Wilson with.
Tait and fellow centre Toby Flood returned to the Falcons' team from the England squad.
League leaders Bristol were below par in the first half with Jason Strange kicking three penalties.
But Bristol mounted a second half fightback with tries from Jason Robinson and Dan Ward-Smith after the break.
Elsewhere, reigning champions Sale edged out Wasps 18-12 in a low-scoring match at Edgeley Park.
The Sharks, who were missing five players through international duty, were led by four penalties by Daniel Larrechea with the fly half also kicking a drop goal.
Lee Thomas kicked a late penalty for the Sharks who keep the pressure at the top of the table.
Jeremy Staunton kicked a hat-trick of penalties for the visitors while Dave Walder scored a late drop goal.
Saturday's fixtures see Bath playing Leicester, Gloucester clashing with Saracens, Harlequins taking on Northampton, and Leicester facing Worcester.
