Jonny Wilkinson could face a spell on the sidelines as he was carried off during Newcastle's 39-23 defeat at Gloucester.
Newcastle and England fly-half Wilkinson only returned from a six-month lay-off this month following surgery on a shoulder problem, but appeared to twist his knee in a ruck before being taken off midway through the first half.
"Hopefully the injury it's not as serious as it looked," said Newcastle rugby director Steve Bates.
"It looks like it is something to do with his left knee, some sort of ligament damage, but we will have to see how it settles down in the next couple of days.
"Jonny is a great competitor. He didn't want to come off."
England begin their autumn Tests at Twickenham in less than six weeks, so the injury could not have come at a worse time.
On the field Iain Balshaw ran-in a hat-trick of tries and James Simpson-Daniel scored twice in a comprehensive victory, which takes Gloucester up to third in the Guiness Premiership.
Wilkinson's injury just made a bad night even worse for the Falcons.
