Spike Jonze's film adaptation of children's classic Where the Wild Things Are has topped the US box office charts, after its first weekend on release.
The Warner Bros film, based on the beloved Maurice Sendak book, took $32.5 million (£19.9 million) to debut at the top of the charts, with last week's number one Couples Retreat falling to fourth.
"Spike has done an incredible job with the movie," Warner Bros president of distribution Dan Fellman told Variety.
"I think we have an interesting film that should play well through the next few weeks."
Overture Films thriller Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, debuted in second while low budget horror Paranormal Activity continues to perform well, climbing one place to third.
The only other new entry in the US top ten was Sony/Screen Gems drama The Stepfather, starring Nip/Tuck's Dylan Walsh and Gossip Girl actor Penn Badgley, which entered in fifth.
