Blackpool pulled off the shock of the night, thrashing Premier League Wigan 4-1 at Bloomfield Road, in the Carling Cup second round.
Roberto Martinez made nine changes from the side that lost 5-0 to Manchester United, however their performance was poor, with
Ian Holloway's team deserving their place in the third round.
The Championship side took the lead when Mohammed Diame gave the ball away in his own half. Brett Ormerod passed to Ishmel Demontagnac who hit a low left foot drive past Ian Pollitt from 20 yards.
Ben Burgess doubled Blackpool's lead after an excellent through ball from Charlie Adam put him clean through.
And Holloway's men went three up with only half an hour gone after Paul Scharner brought down Billy Clarke in the box. Charlie Adam stepped up to take the penalty and scored from the rebound after Pollitt could only parry into the penalty takers path.
Adam created his teams fourth with 20 minutes to go playing an incisive pass to Gary Taylor-Fletcher who slipped the ball past Pollitt.
Antonio Amaya grabbed a late goal for Wigan, but it will have been no consolation to Martinez, whose team have now conceded nine goals in their last two games.
Stoke City had to wait until extra time to break the deadlock in their game against Leyton Orient. Dave Kitson made the decisive breakthrough with a 35-yard drive to secure Tony Pulis' side their place in the next round.
Newcastle came from 3-1 down to beat League One Huddersfield 4-3 at St. James Park. Shola Ameobi made it 3-3 after winning a penalty and Kevin Nolan scored the winner in the 84th minute.
