Leicester prop Julian White has been drafted in as a direct replacement for the suspended Matt Stevens in England's elite squad for the Six Nations.
Bath front row Stevens admitted having a problem with recreational drugs yesterday, prompting the promotion of White from the England Saxons set-up ahead of England's opening match against Italy in just over two weeks' time.
Despite wishing Stevens well in his rehabilitation programme, England team manager Martin Johnson said the 26-year-old's actions "cannot be tolerated".
"The regulations are very clear that any player who has tested positive is immediately provisionally suspended from all competition pending a disciplinary hearing," Johnson explained.
"Matt has admitted that he has a problem and on behalf of the England players and management we hope that his rehabilitation programme is successful."
On the call-up for 35-year-old White, who has not made an appearance for his country since the 2007 Six Nations championship, Johnson said he is confident the veteran can slot straight back into the squad.
He said: "Julian is an experienced international.
"He has had time out of the England set-up but he is in good form and is ready to make the step back up to the senior squad."
As well as being suspended and withdrawn from all squads by England, Stevens also faces the prospect of a lengthy ban by his club Bath.
