The US has pledged $400 million in aid for the Palestinian territories after a meeting between Barack Obama and Mahmoud Abbas at the White House.
The US president and his Palestinian Authority counterpart met in Washington almost two weeks after Israel faced a global backlash for its raid upon a Gaza-bound, Turkish-led aid ship that killed nine activists.
After the talks President Obama condemned the "unsustainable" Israeli blockade upon the Gaza Strip.
"Not only is the status quo with respect to Gaza unsustainable, but the status quo with the respect to the Middle East is unsustainable, it is time for us to go ahead, move forward on a two-state solution," President Obama said.
The $400 million in aid is to be split between Gaza, under the de facto control of Hamas, and the West Bank, under the control of President Abbas' Fatah.
The White House said it intended the aid money to be spent on improved sanitation, job creation, school building, affordable housing and other critical health and infrastructure needs.
