West Ham defender Danny Gabbidon has been ruled out for four weeks with a hamstring injury.
The Welsh international was stretchered off in the second half of the Hammer's 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday.
Gabbidon, 27, picked up the injury after a crunching challenge from Christian Nade with a scan on Sunday revealing the extent of the damage.
The news is a major blow to manager Alan Pardew who has seen his side win three of their last five games to move away from the drop zone.
Gabbidon said he was hopeful of a quick return to action.
"Obviously it's a major disappointment for me," he said.
"I hadn't felt any discomfort in my hamstring at all before the actual injury occurred, so it's just one of those unfortunate things that can happen.
"I am in good hands with the medical team here, though, and I hope to be back as soon as possible."
The tough-tackling defender has made 21 appearances this season alongside Anton Ferdinand.
Gabbidon's place in central defence is expected to be taken by international team-mate James Collins who has returned to full training after a groin injury.
Pardew's side are looking to continue their march up the table against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.
