Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger identified patience as the key virtue which helped his side overcome the spirited challenge of West Ham to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Wenger has never lost a third-round FA Cup tie since taking over as Gunners' manager from the long-forgotten Bruce Rioch in 1996.
He seemed confident of victory when displaying an uncharacteristically sweet mood while exchanging handshakes and warm words with West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola prior to kick-off.
But he endured some tense moments as Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at Upton Park.
After the victory, Wenger said: "It was a very committed game, West Ham tried like mad and we needed to be patient. In the second half it was just a matter of time."
Dropping a heavy hint that Arsenal will use the transfer window to strengthen their squad, he added: "At the moment we have nine injuries. I don't know about a player or two but we will try to be in the market."
