Mike Weir carded a 64 to take the clubhouse lead in the rain-delayed first round of the US Open at Bethpage Black.
The 2003 Masters champion tied the course record with his round of six-under par, after sinking eight birdies to recover from a double-bogey at the sixth.
Weir is two shots clear of Sweden's Peter Hanson. Former world number one David Duval, who went round in 67, has made a poor start to his second round and has slipped back to one under.
Earlier, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and world number two Phil Mickelson both posted one-under par rounds of 69.
But defending champion Tiger Woods suffered a nightmare finish to his first round. The American had been at level par after 14 holes, but two bogeys and a double bogey saw him finish on a four-over par 74.
England's Ian Poulter (70) and Ross Fisher (70) are both on even par, while Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy carded 72.
Veteran Darren Clarke is two shots further back after a four-over 74, while Paul Casey went round in 75.
