Super League side Wigan Warriors have been docked four points after a tribunal found them guilty of breaching salary cup rules last season.
Wigan were found to have breached the cap by £222,314 - an offence according to Super League rules.
Wages can account for up to 50 per cent of club expenditure and the breach put the Warriors six per cent over that limit.
Following the points deduction Wigan have dropped from fourth to ninth in the Super League table, pushing them outside the top six playoff places.
Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay said: "You are always disappointed with any deduction and you are disappointed when you put together what we thought was a very strong argument and it's over-ruled.
"We had two key witnesses, Stuart Fielden and Harrison Hansen, who wanted to give evidence and I thought they were very persuasive and very honest but they apparently weren't considered."
Earlier this month league leaders St Helens and fellow high-flyers Bradford Bulls were punished for spending above the salary cap limit.
Bradford, who overspent by four per cent, were docked two points while St Helens escaped with a £22,000 fine after going over the limit by a nominal amount.
