Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira has confirmed he is set to join Manchester City this week in order to improve his chances of going to the World Cup.
Vieira, 33, is reported to have been in talks with City this week, with several news agencies reporting he is due in England late on Thursday or early Friday to undergo a medical and finalise his contract.
And speaking to Eurosport, the former Arsenal star has corroborated the rumours of an impending return to the Premier League.
"I set myself an objective: I want to go to the World Cup," said the French international.
"The important thing for me is to go to Manchester City and to show the coach [Roberto Mancini] I'm the same player as when he was in charge of Inter."
The rumours were given further credence by comments from current Inter boss Jose Mourinho, who said Vieira "was great in his last game for us" in a 1-0 victory over Chievo on Wednesday evening.
"He is a player that we will certainly miss now that he is leaving. It was the best way to say goodbye to us and I wish him all the best in his new life," Mourinho said.
