The Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is out of the World Cup after the Serbia and Montenegro player tore his knee ligaments in training.
The United stopper suffered a freak injury in the last minutes of last night's training session and ruptured medial knee ligaments.
Vidic was part of the 'Famous Four' defenders that conceded just one goal in the ten qualifying matches leading up to the World Cup.
The team spokesman said: "Our national team will have just 21 players for the rest of our games in Germany as Nemanja Vidic is sidelined because of a serious knee injury.
"During yesterday's practice he went to block a shot but, unfortunately, he rotated his knee too much. His yell was horrendous and we all knew immediately something bad had happened."
Vidic will need several week's recuperation and will not be fit even if the Serbs make an unlikely trip to the final.
The Serbia and Montenegro squad is already one man short after the coach's son Dusan Petkovic, pulled out after the uproar resulting in his father Ilija unlikely team selection.
The team was beaten 1-0 by Holland in their opening game of the tournament and they will take on Argentina on Friday.
