Terry Venables has admitted he would be interested in becoming the next Republic of Ireland boss.
Venables, 60, was dumped as England assistant coach last week after the team's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has asked Republic Under-21 boss Don Givens and Don Howe to hunt for a new manager.
Venables is the red-hot favourite for the post with Paul Jewell, Steve Coppell, Mick McCarthy and Gerard Houllier among the managers who have pulled out of the race.
The former Australia coach said he enjoys managing at international level.
"If it comes around I will think about it then but not before," Venables said.
"I have enjoyed the international experience. It wasn't as good as we wanted it (with England) by any stretch of the imagination.
"I like big challenges. In the main I have not been unhappy with the challenges I have taken on."
The FAI is expected to contact Venables in the next few weeks along with other candidates including David O'Leary, John Aldridge, and Phillippe Troussier.
Venables' last international job was as manager of Australia, but he was sacked after the Socceroos missed out on the 1998 World Cup after going out to Iran in the playoff.
Steve Staunton had his contract as Republic manager terminated in October after the team's dismal Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.
