Michael Vaughan says he feels ready to make his comeback in an England shirt and hopes that his injury problems will help his game reach a higher level mentally.
Vaughan has had to cope with many aborted comebacks over the last 18 months as an initial rest period followed by an operation failed to sufficiently fix his troublesome knee.
After a second bout of surgery and a long period of rehabilitation, the Yorkshire man now feels he is ready for the challenge of international cricket once more.
He said: "I feel ready.
"Mentally I am very fresh, which is quite important at our level. If you're mentally fresh it's amazing how far it can take you.
"I believe I am a better person for what I have been through. I hope I will be a better player."
It had been suggested that Vaughan was aiming to be fit for the third Ashes Test but after failing to make many runs in comeback games while playing for the ECB academy side he has had to watch from the sidelines.
However, he sees the up-coming one day series against Australia and New Zealand as the ideal way to assimilate himself back into the team.
Vaughan said he would also be keen to take back the captaincy but understands that he will not necessarily get the honour automatically as he has been out of the side for so long.
"No one has a given right to be England captain. I'd love to carry on where I left off - but it was a long time ago," he concluded.
