An unbeaten 89 from Michael Vandort prevented England from wrapping up Sri Lanka on the third day of the Edgbaston Test as the tourists reached 194-5.
After two sessions were lost to rain England had hoped to wrap the tourists up following the four top order wickets they took last night. Instead Vandort, together with Tillakaratne Dilshan, removed the first innings deficit without further loss.
England's fast bowlers never looked like taking a wicket although Monty Panesar was able to conjure some spin to trouble the batsmen with a few lbw shouts.
Finally they were successful in the third over from the close of play, with Dilshan finally succumbing to Hoggard for a plucky 59 which included eight boundaries.
It was left to Vandort to bat out the final balls with Farveez Maharoof to see Sri Lanka to the close of play in a much better position than they were in this morning.
Together rain and bullish Sri Lankan resistance have given Mahela Jayawardene's team a chance to snatch an unexpected win if they can put on another 100 runs or so.
But England remain the favourites in a game they have dominated from the beginning and will hope to finish off the Sri Lankan tail quickly tomorrow morning.
