American Ricky Barnes hit a second round 65 to get to eight-under at the US Open and take a one-shot lead over overnight leader Lucas Glover.
Barnes started his second round on Friday in the rain hit tournament and got to five-under-par after nine holes. The 28-year-old added three more birdies in his round to set a US Open scoring record of 132 for 36 holes.
Glover led the second round after 13 holes on six-under-par and picked up another birdie to finish the second round on seven-under with a 64. Canadian Mike Weir also carded a 64 to get to six-under-par and third on the leaderboard.
Japan's Azuma Yano shot a fine round of 65 to take a share of fourth place on three-under alongside Swede Peter Hansen (71) and David Duval (70).
Lee Westwood showed some good form as he hit a second round 66 to get to two-under and was joined on that score by countryman Ross Fisher.
Defending champion Tiger Woods just made the halfway cut-off point of four-over as he hit a second round of 69 to go with his disappointing first round 74 as he finished on three-over. Ian Poulter also made the cut as he ended on four-over.
But there were a number of big casualties who failed to make the cut. English trio Luke Donald, Paul Casey and Justin Rose will all be flying home. Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke also missed the cut.
Two-time US Open champion Ernie Els had a woeful day as he missed the cut after finishing the second round on 15-over.
The star of the second round was no doubt Barnes. The US Open champion was thrilled with the way he was performing.
"At the beginning of the week you didn't think that score was out there," said Barnes.
"With some tees moved up and the soft greens helped it out. And my ball-striking was the most probably impressive part of the first 36 holes. I just got 31 of 36 greens. Pretty stress-free, I think one bogey.
"But also if you would have told me I would have been eight under and only a one-shot lead, I would have said, 'You're kidding me'."
