Manchester United got back to winning ways as they proved too good for Everton at Old Trafford as they maintained their advantage at the top of the table.
Cristiano Ronaldo's goal broke the deadlock as United dominated play in the second-half but could never be truly sure of the victory while it remained at 1-0.
The first goal came on the 38th minute; Michael Carrick created the opportunity as Richard Wright in the Everton goal could not hold on to his shot. The Portuguese winger then fired in the rebound from 20 yards.
Full-back Patrice Evra put the game beyond doubt in the 62nd minute when former Goodison favourite Wayne Rooney played the Frenchman in and he netted from six yards as Wright had no chance.
John O'Shea put the icing on the cake two minutes from the final whistle when he neatly dinked the ball in after Wright failed to hold Rooney's shot from the edge of the area.
The Red Devils were not at their best during the first period but began to click through the gears once they took the lead and cruised to victory in the end.
They had rested Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Louis Saha for the game and will be pleased to have taken the points without the need of such key personnel.
Without Tim Cahill and Andy Johnson Everton lacked the required sharpness in attack and created few chances for themselves despite a battling display.
