Carlos Tevez's long-awaited debut in a Manchester United shirt looks set to be delayed beyond the start of the Premiership season this weekend.
The rumbling saga as to whether the Argentine playmaker would be able to secure his release from West Ham seemed to be solved in his favour last week when his agent Kia Joorabchian reached agreement over a compensation package with the Upton Park club.
However any hopes that manager Sir Alex Ferguson had of throwing the 23-year-old into his matchday squad for the season-opener against Reading on Sunday seem to have been scuppered by registration red tape.
The complex financial arrangement in place between the three parties still needs to be formally signed off before an application can be made to the Premier League to transfer his registration to the champions.
That is unlikely to all be completed in time for the big kick-off although it should easily be settled by the close of the transfer window at the end of this month.
Ferguson had intended to finally field his latest capture in one of United's friendlies against either Dunfermline or Gletoran this week, but those plans have now had to be shelved.
It also seems likely that the protracted affair will be repeated in a couple of summers' time with Tevez signing on a two-year loan at Old Trafford that will leave him and his agent free to pursue another lucrative switch when it expires.
