Manchester United have made an official complaint to Fifa over Real Madrid's involvement in the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga.

The Old Trafford club reported the Spanish giants to the football world governing body over comments made to the press by the management and officials at the Bernabeu.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill have frequently spoken out against Real, who the Premier League champions claim are trying to subvert Ronaldo's loyalty to them.

And after repeated references to the Portuguese star in the English and Spanish media, United have followed through on their threat to make an official complaint over Real's actions.

A statement from the club today reads: "On May 27th, Manchester United made clear its intention to report Real Madrid to Fifa if it continued to involve itself in the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Unfortunately, Real Madrid has not kept its own counsel and the club feels it has no alternative but to make a formal complaint to the world governing body, which it has done today.

"The precise content and nature will remain confidential."

Widespread reports are linking Madrid with a £70 million bid for Ronaldo, who is regarded as the world's best player.

And the rumours of Ronaldo's desire to quit England for the Primera Liga have continued unabated after the player himself refused to comment on his plans for the future until after Euro 2008.
