Chelsea were knocked off the top of the league after losing their first game of the season 3-1 at Wigan.
Titus Bramble headed Roberto Martinez's men into the lead before poor defending allowed Didier Drogba to equalise with his 100th goal for Chelsea. However Hugo Rodallega restored Wigan's lead from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Petr Cech - who was shown the red card - and Paul Scharner headed in late on to secure a historic win at the DW Stadium.
With Chelsea losing Manchester United went to the top of the league with a 2-0 victory at Stoke. Tony Pulis' team looked comfortable in the first-half, but the game swung United's way when Ryan Giggs replaced Nani and set up goals for Dimitar Berbatov and John O'Shea.
Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as Liverpool thrashed Hull 6-1 at Anfield to remain in third. Geovanni equalised for Hull after Torres' opener, but Phil Brown's team couldn't cope with the Spaniard who put his team back into the lead before completing his hat-trick with his eighth goal of the season. Hull's misery was compounded by goals from Steven Gerard and two from Ryan Babel.
Torres may have scored a hat-trick, however he was outdone by former team mate Robbie Keane who scored four in Tottenham's 5-0 win over Burnley at White Hart Lane.
Keane opened the scoring before Jermaine Jenas made it 2-0. Jermain Defoe was forced off injured but his absence did little to hinder Spurs as Keane scored three in the second-half.
Meanwhile Blackburn came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Ewood Park.
Gabriel Agbonlahor scored his fourth goal in four games to put Martin O'Neill's side ahead after three minutes. However Christopher Samba headed Blackburn level and David Dunn scored the winner from the penalty spot in the final minute after Richard Dunne's hand ball.
Down in the lower half of the table Bolton beat Birmingham 2-1. Tamir Cohen put Gary Megson's team ahead from Kevin Davies flick on. Kevin Phillips looked like he had grabbed a point for Birmingham with a goal five minutes from time but when Matt Taylor's free-kick crashed off the post substitute Lee Chung-Yong put in the rebound to secure three points for Bolton.
