Manchester United have been cleared of any wrongdoing over the transfer of 16-year-old French player Paul Pogba from Le Havre.
The English club faced an investigation by Fifa into their courting of the teenager during the summer, with the prospect of an 18-month transfer embargo similar to Chelsea's as punishment if they were found to have breached regulations.
Le Havre claimed Pogba was encouraged to break an agreement with them in order to sign for the Premier League champions.
But Fifa have ruled that United acted correctly and the player was not contracted to Le Havre, and the player can now be officially registered at Old Trafford.
A spokesman told the club's official website: "Manchester United is pleased to confirm that the Football Association has been authorised by Fifa to register Paul Pogba as a United player with immediate effect."
Le Havre have a right to appeal against the decision.
Last month, Chelsea were banned from registering any new players for two full transfer windows because of their illegal overtures in signing another French teenager - Gael Kakuta from Lens in 2007.
The ban effectively prevents them from making any new signings before January 2011, although the Blues are appealing against the Fifa ruling.
