World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson's injury nightmare continues as it was revealed that he will be out for a month after suffering kidney damage in his comeback game last week.
Wilkinson was making his first appearance in a Newcastle jersey since injuring his medial ligament against Worcester two months ago and this latest setback comes just as he scored 11 points as the Falcons beat league leaders Bristol.
The world's best number ten was said to have been complaining of abdominal pain throughout the week following the game and further scans revealed the kidney damage.
Director of rugby John Fletcher said that that Wilkinson had been on great form and that the news was both a blow for the club and the player himself.
However, he backed the ability of Wilkinson to recover from the latest setback, a situation the fly-half is becoming all too accustomed to.
Fletcher said: "Jonny will have a month off from all training, build up from there and we are deliberately not giving an estimated date for his return to match action."
The good news for the 27-year-old is that he does not require surgery and has been advised by doctors to rest.
England coach Andy Robinson said: "We are looking forward to seeing him back playing for Newcastle Falcons and putting this unlucky run of injuries behind him."
Wilkinson has not played for England since his epic drop goal against Australia in the World Cup in 2003.
