Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate has undergone minor groin surgery.
The injury has prevented the central defender from taking part in any of Tottenham's pre-season preparations and means he will definitely miss the start of the season.
Spurs' opening game is at home to Premier League runners-up Liverpool on Sunday with limited options at the back.
Along with Woodgate, Michael Dawson is doubtful with an Achilles injury he picked up in a pre-season friendly against Bournemouth, whilst club captain Ledley King hasn't even kicked a ball.
However, new signing Sebastien Bassong will be available after Tottenham confirmed the player had served a two-match ban he picked up whilst playing for former club Newcastle.
The 23-year-old was sent off in the Magpies penultimate game of last season and missed their final match of the campaign.
Spurs insist he has completed his ban by missing Newcastle's game against West Brom on Saturday, despite signing for the North London club before that game.
A statement read: "Sebastien Bassong will be available for selection for our Premier League season opener against Liverpool on Sunday.
"Given he served the first game of his ban against Aston Villa on the final day of the previous campaign as a Newcastle player, it meant the suspension continued to apply to Newcastle games.
"It was therefore satisfied when his former club visited West Brom on the opening day of the Championship season on Saturday."
