Andy Murray took the first set against Fabio Fognini in Monte Carlo, but rain meant he will have to come back tomorrow to try and secure the win.
The Scot made a terrible start to the match as Fognini was in inspired form reeling off the first five games to take a 5-0 lead. A subdued Murray got on the board but Fognini still was a long way ahead and served for the set.
But Murray managed to break back and finally started to play like the world number four and won a service game in double quick time to get to 3-5. Murray was happy to just get the ball back in play in the next game and it paid off as Fognini made errors to gift Murray another break back.
Murray then made it 5-5 and both men held on to their serve to take the first set into a tie-break. It had been a strange sort of match so far and things continue to swing one way then the other as both players wasted three set point chances. Murray though eventually grinded Fognini down and took it 13-11.
Murray made a solid start to the second set as he took a 1-0 lead and then created three break points on the Fognini serve, but was unable to convert. The rain came at a crucial time with the Italian at 40-40.
The players will come back on at 9:30BST tomorrow, with the winner having to play their quarter-final on the same day.
