Police have handed the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) another file of evidence relating to the expenses of a parliamentarian.

It is yet not clear whether the evidence relates to the expenses claims of an MP or a member of the House of Lords.

The handing over the evidence will not automatically result in charges being bought, with the CPS due to decide whether there is a case.

It is the seventh file relating parliamentarian expenses to be handed over to the CPS.

Four of these files have resulted in charges being bought against three Labour MPs Elliot Morley, David Chaytor and Jim Devine, and Tory peer Lord Hanningfield.

All four face charges of false accounting bought under the Theft Act.

Two further files were handed over to the CPS but no charges were bought.

A statement from the Metropolitan police said: "A small number of cases remain subject to consideration by the joint MPS and CPS assessment panel or are subject to continuing investigation."
