Andy Murray will have to fight his way back from two sets to one down against Nikolay Davydenko when play resumes at Flushing Meadows.
The Scot is aiming for a quarter-final spot, but the world number six clinched the third set to leave the match poised at 6-1 5-7 6-3 to the Russian when the players were ordered off court due to rain.
Murray, under the guidance of new coach Brad Gilbert, has already shown the fighting spirit that will be needed to pull himself back into contention.
Davydenko's experience looked to be the difference between the two in the first set as the Russian strolled through it 6-1.
While his opponent ruthlessly dominated play, Murray became increasingly frustrated at his own errors, cursing every misplaced shot.
But the second set saw him battle to a well-deserved 7-5 victory after initially letting Davydenko break back when he was just a game from levelling the match.
Despite breaking Davydenko in the first game and having several opportunities to repeat the trick, Murray saw the third set slip away from him 6-3 before the weather allowed him a chance to consult with Gilbert.
