Ryder Cup veteran Colin Montgomerie believes that Europe's success in recent competitions makes skipper Nick Faldo's job harder.
Faldo takes over from victorious Welshman Ian Woosnam for the 2008 competition at Valhalla in Kentucky on the back of three successive European victories.
"For Nick, it's almost a shame that Europe have been so successful," said the Scot. "He's got a hard job ahead of him while the American captain will have nothing to lose - in fact he's expected to lose.
"A win in America would be great but it will be very difficult to achieve."
But Montgomerie is confident that Faldo, who will test out his captaincy role in the Seve Trophy next year, is the right man for the role.
"Nick will be a very good captain. I've learnt a lot from him over the years. I played with him in 1993 and 1995 and he loves the Ryder Cup.
"He will do it his way and that's fine because that's what you want - it's no good having a wishy-washy person in charge. You need leadership and someone who is decisive, and Nick is."
