Monty Panesar was again the hero after helping England dismiss Pakistan for 523 to trail by 20 runs after day three of the third Test at Headingley.
The 24-year-old bowled a marathon 44 overs and finished with figures of 3-127 with an impressive economy rate of under three runs an over.
Openers Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss then survived two overs of the new ball as England closed on three without loss.
The tourists passed England's first innings total of 515 thanks to centuries from Mohammad Yousuf (192) and Younis Khan (173) but collapsed in the closing stages.
Bob Woolmer's team were set for a big lead on 447-4 but lost three wickets for four runs in a bizarre ten-minute spell before tea.
Khan was run out by Sajid Mahmood following a mix up with skipper Inzamam Ul-Haq followed by Faisal Iqbal whose disappointing series continued with a first ball duck, falling lbw to Paul Colingwood.
Inzamam then fell on 26 after mistiming a sweep off Panesar and falling onto his wicket and wicketkeeper Akmal (20) edged a delivery off Mahmood to give the fast bowler his first of two wickets.
There was then a stubborn resistance from the tailenders with Mohammad Sami (19) and Shahid Nazir (13 not out) frustrating England's bowlers.
Number 11 Danish Kaneria, whose previous best score from 51 innings was 15, smashed 29 before edging to Trescothick at slip off Panesar.
Steven Harmison (1-142) and Matthew Hoggard (1-93) were both below par in Pakistan's first innings as England look to set a competitive total going into day four.
