Colin Montgomerie has accepted an invitation to captain Europe at next year's Ryder Cup, effectively calling time on his playing career in the competition.
The 45-year-old Scot beat off competition from Jose Maria Olazabal, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam to lead Europe at Celtic Manor in 2010.
The five-time winner had previously been expected to push for a place in the team in 2010 and 2012 before putting himself in contention for the captaincy at Gleneagles in 2014.
Montgomerie is the second-highest points scorer for Europe in the Ryder Cup behind last year's defeated captain Nick Faldo.
In Wales next year he will lock horns with Corey Pavin, who was appointed as Paul Azinger's successor after he presided over the heavy defeat of Europe at Valhalla last year.
