Last year's runner-up Paul McGinley has withdrawn from the BMW Championship after failing to recover from knee surgery.
The Irishman was forced to retire from last week's Irish Open and immediately underwent surgery to remove a piece of floating bone in his left knee.
McGinley was hoping to recover in time to play at Wentworth but he has now admitted that he won't be fit in time.
"Although I had no problem hitting shots or twisting and turning, the problem came walking between shots," McGinley said.
"I nearly made it but it's less than a week since surgery and my knee started to swell."
McGinley played well at both events on the Surrey course last year, losing by two shots to Argentina's Angel Cabrera at the BMW Championship and finishing second at the 2005 World Matchplay behind Tiger Woods.
He admits that he is very disappointed to miss the tournament but he didn't want to do any long-term damage.
"It's disappointing to miss such a marvellous tournament, but the risk was too great," McGinley added.
The 39-year-old is hoping to be back in time to play at next week's Welsh Open, but his place at the BMW Championship will now be taken by England's Benn Barham.
