Full-back Josh Lewsey will not be fit to go on England's tour of Australia in the summer.
The player has suffered a series of injury set-backs this season and has only managed seven starts for his club Wasps.
His season got even worse after he was dropped from England's disappointing Six Nations campaign after below par performances.
Lewsey hopes that by missing the two-match tour down under, he will ensure that he is fit to play a part as England build towards the World Cup in 2007.
He plans to be ready to participate fully in Wasps' pre-season training regime which will give him the chance to last throughout the campaign for both club and country.
He told the BBC: "What is important for me is to start next season fresh and really eager and excited to play.
"It could be a very long season and hopefully if I am involved leading up to the World Cup, the only time I will get a break will be this summer."
He added: "Usually my body has held up, but this season it has started creaking. I am having a scan next week on my shoulder and I will wait and see what I need to do after that."
