Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko beat first-round opponent Stefano Galvani in the first round of the French Open - thanks to the rain.
The 25-year-old admitted after his victory that his lack of punctuality in arriving at Roland Garros threatened his participation in the tournament.
Davydenko said he was nervous about being disqualified because he was stuck in Parisian traffic while trying to get to the world-famous venue.
"I was thinking, I don't have time to take shower, I don't have time to change clothes. it was pretty tough," he said.
The Russian had little difficulty in dispatching Galvani, winning 6-3 6-3 6-1 in the only completed men's match on Monday.
Roger Federer was 6-4 4-1 up against Michael Russell when the rains came down yet again, delaying a successful start to his Paris campaign. The French Open is the only major championship yet to elude the world number one.
In the women's singles, Venus Williams beat French opponent Alize Cornet 6-4 6-3.
Showers are forecast for tomorrow's play but the day should yield more results than today's wash-out.
