Gordon Brown must start to exert his power more and be "much tougher" following this week's Crewe and Nantwich by-election, a Labour party donor has said.

Philanthropist Lord Paul told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper that although Mr Brown's agenda is clear, he must start to act soon.

This week saw the party lose its hold in Crewe and Nantwich. Following the death of Gwyneth Dunwoody, Conservative candidate Edward Timpson won the local vote and will now represent the constituency.

Lord Paul said Labour's loss was "very unfortunate" but should give the prime minister the message that his changes need to start taking effect.

"We have got to get on with the job," the peer told the newspaper.

"I think he's the best man for the job but he needs to get on with it."

Meanwhile, cabinet office minister Ed Miliband spoke on morning programme GMTV and maintained his support for the prime minister, the BBC news service reports.

Describing Mr Brown as "the right man for the times," Mr Miliband said it was clear no leadership battle would take place before the next general election.

"People will see that Gordon Brown and the Labour party are the right people to take this country forward."
