Manchester City manager Mark Hughes paid tribute to his players after they claimed a crucial 3-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League today.

A Daniel Sturridge long-range strike and a couple from Brazilian star Elano were enough to sink ten-men West Ham, who had Mark Noble sent off.

The win today will help ease some of the tension surrounding the club, who are in the spotlight as their owner Thaksin Shinawatra is under investigation in his native Thailand for corruption charges.

"There have been a lot of negative things said about the club in the past week and it was nice to get back to football," Hughes commented.

"The response from my players was excellent - right from the start they had the right attitude and tempo.

"Irrespective of West Ham having a man sent off, I felt we would have won. It was important to get a positive result today and concentrate on the football."

Rumours have suggested that City are financially stricken due to Shinawatra having £800 million of his assets frozen by Thai officials. But Hughes insisted he was still confident of bringing in new players to the club before the end of the transfer deadline.

"Right through this window we've been bidding for good players, so the money is there for me to invest and that's what I'll be looking to do," he said.
