Four bodies have been found onboard the helicopter which crashed in woodland in Cambridgeshire last night, police have confirmed.

Businessman Phillip Carter, the founder of vocational qualifications firm Carter & Carter and a wealthy Chelsea supporter, is said to have been on board the twin squirrel helicopter.

His friend, Jonathan Waller, and Stephen Holdich, the co-owner of Atlas helicopters, are also reported to have been onboard.

The helicopter was due at a private residence in Thornhaugh, just north of Peterborough, but failed to arrive.

Police received calls at 01:45 BST to alert them about the missing helicopter, which is believed to have been on its way back from the Champions League semi-final game between Chelsea and Liverpool last night.

"The helicopter was found largely intact at the crash site in Bedford Purlies Wood between Wansford and Duddington north of Peterborough," a spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire police said.

Investigations are being carried out by Civil Aviation Authorities.

"We are not yet able to confirm the identities of those onboard the helicopter, we will await the conclusion of formal identification procedures until those identities are released," Cambridgeshire police added.

"The area has been cordoned off to allow search and rescue officials to deal with the scene."

Chelsea earlier said it is not aware of any officials being involved and that all club officials are accounted for.

"Following media reports regarding a missing helicopter last night, Chelsea Football Club can confirm all club officials are accounted for," a statement from the club said.

"We are trying to confirm, as a matter of urgency, whether the incident involved anyone with a connection to the club."
