England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff faces an anxious wait to see if he will be fit for the first Test against Pakistan at Lords in a fortnight.
The 28-year old powerhouse has been nursing a sore left ankle picked up during the third Test defeat to Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge at the beginning of June.
Flintoff, who had been deputising as captain, told Sky Sports a decision will be made in two weeks and he is hoping to avoid having further surgery.
He added: "There is scar tissue in there and whether the bone fragments were the result of the operation or were already in there we don't know.
"We are going down the route of physio and exercises to strengthen the ligaments around the ankle.
"I'm not running at the moment, I'm doing a lot of cycling. I'm doing things that don't cause pain and trying to tick over."
Last summer, Flintoff had surgery had on the same ankle and regained full fitness ahead of the historic Ashes series.
England may be tempted to leave out the Lancastrian for the Pakistan series and the Champions trophy in September ahead of the rematch against Australia this winter if surgery is required.
England are already without captain Michael Vaughan, spinner Ashley Giles and pace duo Simon Jones and James Anderson for the series against Pakistan, who beat Duncan Fletchers side 2-0 at home last winter.
