Spaniard David Ferrer cruised into the semi-finals of the US Open this evening with a 6-2 6-3 7-5 victory over Aregentinian Juan Ignacio Chela.
Ferrer, who defeated countryman and world number two Rafael Nadal in the previous round, was the more aggressive player throughout the match and his crunching baseline power was too much for Chela.
Chela had beaten Ferrer in their last three meetings but looked a tired figure from the very beginning of the match after coming through two gruelling five-set match in the earlier rounds.
The 25-year-old Ferrer comfortably won the first two sets, but was made to work a little harder in the third. He lost his serve to go 2-0 down but Chela could not take advantage and Ferrer broke back twice to claim the set and match.
"I am very happy because he was a little tense in the first set. I am very happy as I am playing very well at this tournament," said Ferrer.
"It was very tough against Rafa [Nadal], but I am very confident and with the support of the people it is unbelievable."
Ferrer will either face countryman Carlos Moya or world number three Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.
Although Djokovic is ranked higher than Moya and has won two Masters Series tournaments this year, Ferrer might be more confident of beating the Serbian as he has lost on six of the eight occasions he has faced Moya.
