Alex Ferguson has admitted that Roy Keane's departure as Sunderland boss may mark the end of the former Manchester United captain's managerial career.
Keane brought an end to a two-year spell at the Stadium of Light yesterday following a string of bad results which left the club in the relegation zone.
And Ferguson, who rated Keane as his best player during 12 years at Old Trafford, said it was not certain the 37-year-old would be back.
"I am surprised," the United boss said. "Trying to cut through rumour and fact in the football industry today is difficult.
"You are never quite sure what has happened and the rumour mill is operating at 100 miles an hour at the moment. We just wish Roy well because he was a great player here.
"It is difficult to say whether he will be back or not."
Ferguson, whose team host Sunderland at home this weekend, added:
"But he was an incredibly controversial character. Every week he always had something to say about the game but he was controversial, even as a player he was that.
"A fantastic player but an interesting character."
