Andy Farrell's unsettled introduction to rugby union has taken another turn with the former Wigan Warriors captain left out of the Saracens squad to face Bath at the weekend.
The 31-year-old powerhouse tried out the number 12 jersey for the first time in a mid-week friendly against Cambridge University but has been rested for the weekend's Guinness Premiership game at Vicarage Road.
"Andy will be given opportunities at both six and 12," said Saracens rugby director Alan Gaffney.
"But the overall point in all of this is that he still needs to be given more time to adapt to the game."
After initially attempting to mould Farrell into an openside flanker, the Saracens management may have been swayed by England's desire to experiment with him in the backline.
Many observers have questioned whether a player who has spent the vast majority of his career in rugby league will have the time or adaptability to fill one of the 15-man-code's most specialised positions.
"More chances will come over the next few weeks when we have a busy first team and A team schedule," Australian Gaffney added.
"When he settles down, we will see which position suits him best."
