A controversial Islamic group has called off a planned protest against the war in Afghanistan amid claims it was to be banned under terrorism legislation.
Home secretary Alan Johnson was reportedly on the verge of outlawing Islam4UK as it planned to demonstrate in Wootton Bassett.
The Wiltshire town has become the centre of public mourning over the war, with hundreds of people lining the streets as soldiers are repatriated at nearby RAF Lyneham.
Private Robert Hayes, 19, from the First Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment, is due to become the first British fatality of 2010 in Afghanistan to be repatriated at the base today.
But as right-wing extremists and police poured into Wootton Bassett, Islam4UK called off a planned march that Gordon Brown had condemned as "disgusting".
In a statement posted on its website the group, which has radical cleric Anjem Choudary as its spokesperson, said it had "successfully highlighted the plight of Muslims in Afghanistan globally".
Islam4UK added that it still planned to protest against the "atrocities" being committed against Muslims in Afghanistan.
Since the conflict began in 2001 246 UK soldiers have died in Afghanistan.
