A human head found in Leicestershire and a severed arm and leg found in a neighbouring county belonged to the same man, police confirmed today.
Police said the man's head found by a farmer near Ashfordby on Tuesday was forensically linked to the arm and leg which were found in two separate sites in Hertfordshire last week.
Leicestershire police said they would now be working jointly with Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire constabulary's major crime unit to investigate the murder.
Although there is still no clue as to the identity of the man the body parts belong to, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Hanlon told a press conference police would be looking through missing persons' reports to see if they could match the description of the man.
He added although a full DNA profile of the man had been obtained, the details did not match any of those on the national DNA database.
Detective Inspector Hanlon, from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit, said: "Lines of enquiry which have come to light since the initial discovery are being followed up but at this stage no speculation can be made about how this man was murdered."
The man is described as white or Asian, between 5ft 6in and 5ft 10in tall, with size seven to nine feet. Tests have also confirmed he suffered from eczema that caused his skin to "scale".
The head was found next to a temporary cattle pen near Holby Road, Ashfordby earlier this week.
The arm, which was missing the man's hand, was found by walkers 80 miles away in Wheathampstead on Sunday, while the leg was discovered in a green bag near Cottered on March 22nd.
Police believe the leg was found less than two days after being dumped, and are now considering whether the other body parts were discarded on the same day.
