England finished day one of the second Test with Sri Lanka on 138-3 after they had bowled the tourists out for just 141 runs.
Sri Lanka had won the toss and elected to bat but Liam Plunkett had been the star of England's bowling attack taking 3-43 off 12 overs and he was supported by Saj Mahmood and Matthew Hoggard who took a pair of wickets each.
England strode out to bat purposefully and were off to a flying start before Marcus Trescothick (27) and Andrew Strauss (30) gave away their wickets.
England reached 50 without loss before captain Mahela Jayawardene called in Muttiah Muralitharan, with his second ball he took the wicket of Trescothick.
Strauss then followed his opening partner into the pavilion after a comical dismissal. He went for a quick single but it was Alistair Cook's call and he appeared to be sending his partner back. In the end the Middlesex batsman was well out of his ground when the bails were removed and he trudged off the field with England on 69-2.
Murali took his second wicket after Cook (23) had carved him away for four. The very next ball was the dreaded doosra and Cook was plumb lbw.
Kevin Pietersen (30 not out) was beginning to get into his stride as he was joined at the crease by nightwatchman Hoggard (2 not out).
At close of play England were just three runs behind their opponents with seven wickets in hand.
