Lindsay Davenport has crashed out of the last 16 of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami after losing to Dinara Safina 6-3 6-4.
The American, who returned to tennis in September following an 11-month break after becoming a mother, could not repeat the form which has seen her win tournaments in Auckland and Memphis.
Davenport, the 32nd seed, struggled throughout against the Russian and made 34 unforced errors which included six double faults.
The former world number one admitted she failed to get close to the form that saw her beat second seed Ana Ivanovic yesterday.
"That's the thing with tennis. Every day you start over," Davenport said.
"But hopefully more positives than negatives come from this tournament.
"She did everything better than I did. I came up against a player today that was real intense and real eager to win."
Meanwhile, Justine Henin booked her place in the quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-2 win against Russian Elena Vesnina.
Number six seed Venus Williams saw off Dane Caroline Wozniacki 6-3 6-3, after hitting 23 winners.
The American, a three-time winner at Key Biscayne, said she feels in top form.
"I played some good tennis and aggressive when I needed to, and a lot of really good service games," Williams said.
"I'm always trying to take it to another level, regardless. If I'm playing on cloud nine, I'm trying to get to cloud ten, and actually cloud 11."
Number three seed Svetlana Kuznetsova booked her place in the last eight thanks to a 7-6 6-3 win over Israel's Shahar Peer.
